Greetings all. In this post I will be discussing how my first week of van dwelling has been. I will try to cover both the physical and emotional aspects.
First I must say, I love my new home! I have really enjoyed living out of the van. I am very happy with how I have the van setup. I have not had any issues with anything not working out. I am able to prepare my meals just fine. Having the fridge is very convenient. My solar setup it working out just fine, even with some cloudy days. I feel safe and secure in the van. Because I am stealth camping in the city, I try use public restrooms for all of my bathroom needs. This has not been a problem at all. I do have an emergency toilet, but I have not had the need to use it. I have a membership for a gym which allows me to take showers there. I also shower at friends and family when it is convenient. My bed is very comfortable. I have been getting a good nights sleep most of the time. I have a rotation of spots that I park for daytime camp and night time camp. I spent my days at our beautiful parks. This is usually where I get my exercise outside of the van. I enjoy reading under the shade of a tree. I also do a lot of my writing at the picnic tables in these parks. I also take advantage of the public grills that most of our parks have. I keep charcoal with me so I’m able to grill up my dinner at the park. Otherwise I will prepare my meals in the van. Most of our parks close at sundown in the winter months. This means by around 6:30 p.m. its time for me to head to my sleeping spot. Most of my night time spots are near my work. I try to keep a bit of distance between where I hang out during the day and where I park to sleep. By this I mean, I don’t spend the night to close to any of the parks I day camp at.
I work early mornings so I am up and gone from my night time spot by 4:30am. This keeps things pretty stealth because I’m gone before anyone could notice me. On the days that I don’t work I am at the beaches and bays. Those are really my favorite spots. I would camp around them everyday except my workplace is inland and I try to save on gas by sticking close to work on my scheduled work days. Probably my favorite part of van dwelling is waking up on my days off and being just feet from the ocean.
Obviously I like my alone time, otherwise van dwelling might be a bad choice. My experience so far has provided me with some pretty amazing moments of clarity within myself. Through connecting with nature and having time to really evaluate my life and the planet I live on, has given me a greater sense of self. Simplified living forces that. I have yet to experience boredom while van dwelling. The days pass by quickly.
Well, that’s it for now. I can definitely say I am already ‘Living More, on Less Money’ and it is awesome!
